In September of 2020, the 鶹AV team started Griffiss 15-33 Runway Reconstruction Project in Rome, NY. The first week consisted of completing rubblizing the existing concrete runway, three days of around the clock milling of the rubblized concrete and installing 6” underdrain on both sides of the runway.

Once the milling was complete, one 3” lift of the asphalt base course was completed in 10 pulls per specifications of the specialized project scope. Upon base completion, many tons of T&L were needed throughout the runway prior to the surface course to create a uniform 2” for the final lift. The final surface course lift was completed in 10 pulls over 4.5 days. For this project, the Trimble GPS Machine Control System was utilized on the milling machine and paver to achieve a final, uniform grade throughout the project. The 鶹AV crew completed safely, on time, and on budget due to the help of everyone in the New York Central region.

鶹AV Midwest Central crews completed the construction of a roundabout 18 days early at the intersection of SR 73 and Jacksonburg Road in Butler County, OH under a contract for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

MWC crews headed up by Tony Singer, Superintendent; and Greg Crider, Foreman; were challenged to build the roundabout while maintaining traffic on SR 73, a main access road to the MillerCoors brewery and Miami University (Oxford Ohio).

An additional challenge was raising the intersection elevations by 8 feet while maintaining traffic. Through the two significant challenges, the MWC team successfully completed the project early.

Once the roundabout was complete, we observed successful traveling results from the traveling public, ODOT, and 鶹AV. A huge thank you to Tony Singer, Superintendent; and Greg Crider, Foreman; for leading this crew and making this roundabout the success it is today

Due to the complexity, professionalism, and partnering completed, the ODOT project engineer nominated this project for a statewide award. This project was awarded second place out of seven submissions in the category #1 in the state ODOT Partnering Competition.

Once again, the 鶹AV team recognized and managed the challenges presented and utilized their expertise to meet the customer’s needs.

MWC Construction crews finished work on US 50 in Village of Mariemont and Columbia Township, in Hamilton County, Ohio. Mariemonte is a very historic and prestigious suburb of Cincinnati. The major challenge to this project was the high volume of traffic that passes  through the project each day. US 50 is a main artery from Cincinnati to the eastside of town that is lined with residences in this section of roadway. This forced all the work to be completed during the day to keep from conflicting with the residents’ sleep schedule. The four-mile-long project started in July of 2019 and was completed in early August 2020, 3 weeks ahead of schedule.

Work consisted of storm drainage conduit and structures, slope stabilization, roadway crown correction to improve pavement drainage, along with many handicap ramp replacements. The following crews were involved with the project:

Grading and storm and handicap ramps –Eric Siefker, Foreman; Matt Kilgore, Foreman; Darrin Conley, Milling Foreman; Mitch Miller, Paving Foreman

鶹AV Midwest Central completed paving for the Dayton International Airport Runway 18-36 Rehabilitation in August of 2018 with surface and base mix being laid in two phases. One of the biggest challenges was not being allowed onto the airport grounds until the first day of construction. Other challenges for 鶹AV Mid-Ohio aggregates and Midwest Central asphalt lab technicians were the manufacturing of new aggregates and special target gradations to meet mix design requirements and the increased frequency of quality testing requirements. The project also required 100% crushed material, which made it difficult to keep up with the other everyday aggregates like 3/4″ and 3/8″ sizes. This was such a critical project, many other projects had to be switched to other plants.

In April of 2018, prep work and milling the runway shoulders for Phase One began. The crews laid and tested many tons of base mix followed even more tons of surface mix to complete Phase One on June 1st. Four weeks later, after the Dayton Air Show concluded, the crews began their prep work for Phase Two.

The second phase presented some challenges for everyone with more surface mix and site work resulting in long hours. More lab technicians were required to handle testing of the airport mixes, requiring outside testing laboratories to test for several of Midwest Central’s other projects. Thanks to the combined efforts of the MWC division and the MOH division, Phase Two was completed on August 24th with final completion in October with no penalties incurred.

In the Summer of 2018, work continued on the Route 81 & Vendor Placed Paving project. The project started on the U.S. mainland Rt. I81, crossing the Thousand Island Bridge, and continuing across Wellesley Island to the Canadian Border. The project included 40 lane miles of paving supervised by Michael Friedline and his dedicated team. It also comprised over 14 miles of guiderail replacement along with other various items of work.

This project tied in with the Route 12 Vendor Placed Paving project. Both of which involved very heavy summer traffic and were a challenge to complete during the Thousand Island tourist season.

The project successfully completed in September 2018.

鶹AV – New York Central

In the Summer of 2019, the City of Syracuse Creekwalk Phase II job follows the banks of the Onondaga Creek for 2.3 miles on the south side of Syracuse, New York. Paving’s New York Central crew began excavating on the Creekwalk in Spring of 2018. On paper it was simple – construct a 3’ tall concrete wall with a slope to make a 12’ wide multi-use bicycle and pedestrian path. The challenging part was doing so underneath a bridge, on the edge of the creek bed, and built on the existing ground that was only around 6’ wide. These obstacles pushed the 鶹AV team’s ingenuity, imagination, and resourcefulness.

As soon as excavating began, an unmarked cast iron pipeline was encountered that ran beneath the entire job site. It was an old Brine line left over from the once thriving salt industry in Syracuse – hence the nickname ‘Salt City’. Once the pipeline was removed, the crew excavated their way down and worked under the bridge to set the grade for the trail. The next obstacle was to form and pour a vertical wall on the steep bank of the creek – sloped with blocked stone. There was no way of walking on the stone, no flat surface on which to build, and no easy seam to gain some traction.

It was our Superintendent, Wesley Hood who recommended using signposts to build a safe and flat platform to work from. Keith Saunders and his crew ensured there were ample braces on the forms in preparation for the concrete which had to be pumped underneath the bridge.

Construction Foreman Colten Sullivan stated “The ability to develop unique solutions to a set of such challenging obstacles instills a great deal of pride in what the team accomplished. Without Dave Stanton and his crew being able to find a way to excavate all the dirt out and set our grade; without Keith Saunders and his concrete crew making sure everything was formed and secured for the mount of concrete going into that area; and without Wesley orchestrating the project, we would never have executed the task so smoothly and safely. This challenge was the most complex and unique one I’ve seen on any of our jobs. I’m proud of what our guys accomplished and the way in which they all worked together to conquer this project.
